Bankroll management: the only thing that keeps you alive

Variance is brutal. A sound bankroll strategy is the one non-negotiable.

Why bankroll is the first thing we teach

You can have the sharpest edge in the world and still go broke in six months if you bet too much per play. This is the math of ruin, and every professional bettor has memorized it.

Variance in sports betting is enormous. Even a 55% winner (elite by any standard) will go on 10-game losing streaks. If you're betting 20% of your bankroll per play, a normal losing streak wipes you out. If you're betting 1-2%, you barely notice.

The 1% rule

Your unit is 1% of your current bankroll. One play = one unit. If your bankroll is $1,000, your unit is $10. A "2-unit play" = $20. A "5-unit play" = $50.

That's it. That's the system. It's boring, which is why most people skip it.

Why percentage, not fixed dollars

Fixed-dollar betting is dangerous because it doesn't adapt. Say you bet $50 flat with a $1,000 bankroll (5% per play). Lose 10 straight and your bankroll is $500 but you're still betting $50 (10% per play). You're now over-levered and one cold week from busto.

Percentage betting auto-corrects. Bankroll shrinks, bet size shrinks. Bankroll grows, bet size grows. You can't bankrupt yourself if every play is a fraction of what you have left.

Recompute monthly, not daily

Resize your unit once a month. Daily re-sizing forces you to constantly adjust and invites emotional decisions. Set it on the 1st, leave it alone for 30 days, reset on the next 1st.

Your actual bankroll

Your bankroll is money you can afford to lose and not feel it. If losing it would hurt your rent, your relationship, or your sleep, it is too big.

Write this number down. Put it in your tracker. That's the only number that matters.

Unit flex

Different plays warrant different sizes. We use a 1-5 scale:

  • 1u: standard play, no special conviction
  • 2u: above-average confidence
  • 3u: strong pick, clear edge identified
  • 4u: premium play, rare
  • 5u: max conviction lock, even rarer

If you're finding 5u plays every day, you're over-rating your conviction. True 5u plays happen maybe once a week.

TL;DR

  • 1 unit = 1% of current bankroll
  • Reset unit size monthly
  • Never more than 5% of bankroll on a single bet
  • Never chase losses
  • Bankroll is money you can lose

This is the framework everything else in the Academy builds on. Memorize it.
